John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Lennox, was a Scottish nobleman who lived from 1495 to 1526. He was the son of Matthew Stewart, 2nd Earl of Lennox, and Lady Elizabeth Hamilton. He was a distant relative of the Scottish royal family and was a member of the powerful Stewart dynasty.
John Stewart was a key political figure in Scotland during the reign of King James V. He was an ally of the English king, Henry VIII, and married Lady Margaret Douglas, the daughter of Henry's sister, Margaret Tudor. This marriage gave him a claim to the English throne, as Lady Margaret was considered a potential successor to her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I.
John Stewart was involved in several plots and rebellions against the Scottish crown, including the 'Amicable Grant' rebellion in 1525. He was imprisoned in Stirling Castle for his role in this rebellion and died there in 1526, reportedly of natural causes.
Despite his controversial political activities, John Stewart was a patron of the arts and supported the construction of several important buildings in Scotland, including Stirling Castle and the Palace of Linlithgow. He was also known for his interest in astrology and alchemy, and was a member of an early scientific society known as The Order of the Garter.
